Motorhome trip around Lake Constance
Lake Constance – Bodensee
A tour around the beautiful Lake Constance takes in visits to the three central European countries of Austria, Switzerland and Germany with their picturesque, historic lakeside towns and villages. The sparkling clear waters of the lake offer opportunities for swimming, sailing and windsurfing and tourists fill the cruise ships which provide short trips, full day trips, evening cruises or car ferry services. A trip here is not complete without a visit to the thunderous waters of the Rheinfalls at Stein-am-Rhein. Visitors to the Lake Constance area will find a wide selection of hotels, guest houses, camp sites and motorhome stops set amongst spectacular alpine scenery. Lake Constance is the third largest freshwater lake in Europe and is an important source of fresh drinking water in the area and is fed by the mighty Rhine River. It is 63km long and, at its widest point is 14km across. The lake is split into two connected sections the smaller Untersee (lower lake) and the larger Obersee (upper lake).
The island town of Lindau sits on the German shores of Lake Constance and is a stunning tourist destination with its medieval city centre and distinctive port entrance with lighthouse and Bavarian Lion sculpture and Promenade on the Aeschach lake side with street artists and muscians. In the Maximilianstraße (main shopping street) there are a wide variety of shops, restaurant and cafes, look out for the impressive Historic Town Hall with its beautifully painted façade. Places of worship include the Church of St. Stephan, Peterskirche (Church of St. Peter) and the Cathedral “Unserer Lieben Frau” former church of the monastery ’’Maria Himmelfahrt’’. A trip to Lindau must include visiting some of the wonderful bakery cafes to sample the tempting array of cakes, pastries and ice creams on offer. From the harbour take a cruise on one of the ships which offer cruises of 1 hour, two hours or even full day cruises. The Motorhome stop is situated at the large Park & Ride and provides a bus to and from Lindau. There are a number of Campsites locally but make sure to book in high season as these do get very full.
