— Family Attractions in LA —
Bringing the kids to LA? They’re going to love it, especially if you take them to some of these fun, family friendly attractions.
California Science Center
Your child’s imagination will soar at the California Science Centre, where the Space Shuttle Endeavour is on display. Located in a special pavilion just outside the main Science Centre building, the Endeavour is on view while the new Samuel Oschin Air and Space Centre is being built. Inside the museum, kids can explore fun and informative exhibits presented in interactive worlds, and through hands-on experiences they’ll learn about human inventions and innovations, the life processes of living things and more. Also features a seven-story IMAX theatre, the largest in Los Angeles.
Natural History Museum
The whole family will enjoy the spectacular Dinosaur Hall, the West Coast’s premier dinosaur destination that features the world’s only T. rex growth series. The NHM is the oldest cultural institution in Los Angeles and the largest natural and historical museum in the country, with a world-renowned collection of natural and cultural history of more than 35 million objects, some as old as 4.5 billion years.
Museum La Brea Tar Pits
These creatures were last seen wandering around in the Pleistocene era — not that long ago in the world of geology. The Page Museum offers kids an introduction to sabre-toothed cats, mastodons, giant sloths and others circa 10,000 BC. Think Ice Age rather than Land Before Time.
Zimmer Childrens Museum
This hidden LA gem, located on Museum Row, features interactive exhibits that help children explore themes like diversity and community responsibility. Kids can stage a performance — complete with costumes and set pieces — at the Mann Theatre, pilot an airplane bound for a distant land and drive an ambulance while learning about helping others.
Los Angeles Zoo
Sure, nearly every city has a zoo. But not every zoo has a carousel like this one does. Located high atop Treetops Terrace, the Tom Mankiewicz Conservation Carousel features 66 artisan-crafted figures as diverse as the zoo’s animals themselves. Ride a komodo dragon, poison dart frog or a dung beetle chariot, and see gorillas at the immersive Campo Gorilla Reserve or a rare harpy eagle at the Rainforest of the Americas, opening in 2013.
Hollywood has the only horse ranch in greater Los Angeles, centrally located near Griffith Park in the beautiful Hollywood Hills. Sunset Ranch offers a variety of services and activities from guided trail rides, boarding, and lessons, to its famous Sunset Dinner Rides. Set up a Kid’s Party and Sunset Ranch’s seasoned guides will give the kids a 30 minute group lesson and a one hour ride.
Kidspace Children’s Museum
If you want to inspire your kids to enjoy learning, there’s no better place than Kid space Children’s Museum at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena. Indoor and outdoor spaces filled with unique exhibits make it the kind of place where kids will have too much fun to realize they’re actually learning.
Located at one of LA’s most recognizable landmarks, the theme park on the historic Santa Monica Pier is the perfect place for kids and the young at heart. Combine a visit with an afternoon on the beach and you’ve got the perfect day in LA. Rides, games, food and the beautiful Pacific Ocean: Pacific Park is a great place to experience Los Angeles at its fi nest.
At the Cabrillo Marine Aquarium, kids can visit a touch tank, try to spot hidden octopuses in the Camouflage Tank and explore the Cabrillo Beach Coastal Park with a CMA-trained Sea Ranger. In nearby Long Beach, the Aquarium of the Pacific is home to more than 12,500 ocean animals displayed in nineteen major habitats and 32 different exhibits. There’s even a place for the kids to get their hands wet and touch some sharks.
