Åre is an alpine ski area in Sweden, founded in 1909. It is located in Åre Municipality, Jämtland, just outside and above the village of Åre, approximately 80 km (50 mi.) from the city of Östersund. The ski lift system is on the Åreskutan mountain, at an elevation of 1420 meters (4660 ft.); its absolute summit is not lift-served, but is reachable by snowmobile. The village and ski area are accessible by bus and train. The nearest airport is Åre Östersund Airport. With a latitude of 63.4° north, the ski area is approximately 350 km (220 mi.) south of the Arctic Circle.
Åre’s slopes are situated on the mountainsides rising up from Åre Lake, but not all of the ski centres are interlinked. The lift system that is in place is modern, but be prepared for lots of T-bars. The ski school offers instruction at all levels for all ages, starting at three years, and the resident instructors speak English. Private lessons are available for a higher fee. Once confident, beginners can head to Duved, Ullådalen and Åre Björnen, where there are wide and easy runs for those looking to take their first forays onto the slopes. Duved is also excellent for intermediate skiers, with several runs offering smooth but fast skiing opportunities. Central Åre has many slopes that are well adapted to intermediates, but this is also where the steepest runs are located. It is on central Åre’s black pistes, as well as in the off-piste areas – particularly the so-called ‘Backside’ – that advanced skiers find their greatest challenges. The off-piste skiing in Åre is among the best in Scandinavia. In addition, Tegefjäll has excellent tree runs. Freestylers, meanwhile, can try out their latest tricks in the terrain park and halfpipe. The ski season in Åre runs from late November until late April, with snow cover reliable throughout the season. Ski hire outlets are located near the slopes.
Après-ski comes from the French for “After Skiing” but is now used universally and refers to the socializing that is popular after a days skiing ends. When the sun goes down is when the ski resorts come alive and enjoying a steaming mug of hot Chocolate laced with rum or a glass of hot Gluhwein whilst watching the sunset over the snow covered mountain peaks is a memory which will last a life-time.
