Every year on the first weekend in December the “Chlaus- und Kunsthandwerkmart” (St. Nicholas & Arts and Crafts Market) takes place in the Unterstadt (the lower part of the town). At the many small stalls you can buy spices, candles, Christmas tree decoration and a great selection of Christmas presents.
The St Nicolaus procession through the Old Town is on Saturday, 4.45 pm. For the children there is a lantern procession with St. Nicholas and his donkey through the Old Town, on Saturday at 4.45 pm. They will get a Grittibänz (sweet bread shaped like a little man) from St. Nicholas, who is present on both days, and after the lantern procession, also a St. Nicholas goody bag. All in all, 1600 Grittbänzes will be distributed during these two days to the market visitors. Another special highlight is the Traichlergruppe, young men who go running past the market stalls ringing big Swiss bells and cracking whips.
