The Christmas Market in Mainz takes place every year on the historic square in front of the impressive backdrop of Mainz Cathedral, St. Martin and St. Stephen. From the station, the Christmas market is easy to reach by bus or on foot. The rows oin the Christmas Market have names like “Sternenhimmel”, “Nikolausgasse”, “Ruprechtspfad”, “Weihnachtsallee”, “Adventsgasse”, “Unterm Christbaum,” etc., which also serves for better orientation. There is an interesting program of events awaiting visitors to Mainz. There are showmen and artists alondside the decoraated stalls selling gifts and culinary delights which include chesnuts, almonds, chocolates, truffles, chocolate covered fruits, spices, Glühwein, teas, pizza, sausages and fries. Christmas decorations and gifts such as wreaths, wood carvings, nativity figures and stables, Christmas Tree decorations, wooden toys, tin toys, gloves, shawls, knitwear and woolen goods, Christmas Candles, ceramics and so much more. Close to the entrance is a Christmas Carousel for the young visitors and another ride can be found at the Cathedral.

Visitors to Mainz are always impressed with the hand-carved nativity scene in front of the Gotthard Romanesque chapel at the Cathedral in Mainz. The life-size nativity figures, the largest in Europe, is the work of Oberammergau Master Sepp Erhard. There are concerts held on the stage in front of the crib, there are trumpets and trombones and choral singing during the Christmas period which provides for a festive atmosphere.

On the 6th December St Nikolaus will be making an appearance between 5 and 6 o’clock in the market place.

German Christmas Markets or Weihnachtsmarkt,have now become popular and are a welcome and familiar sight in many of the cities, towns and villages throughout Europe during the season of Advent.

Wrap up warm and wander along the rows of pretty wooden chalets taking in the rich, warming aromas associated with Christmas such as hot roast chestnuts, grilled bratwurst sausages, crepes or pancakes, hot doughnuts, gingerbreads and Gluhwein or Mulled wines or ciders. You can sample the marzipan figures, chocolate covered fruits or one of the many festive delicacies on offer from around the world. There are all kinds of Christmas gifts and decorations, especially traditional things such as tree decorations, wood carvings, crib figures, traditional toys, candles, hand-knitted jumpers, lambskin slippers and glassware, you will be able to find that special little something that will be a unique gift for someone to treasure. Children will be excited to meet with Santa Claus and maybe, just maybe!! there will be a little present for them too!
