Every year, the squares around St. Blasii Cathedral are transformed into a beautiful Christmas market with elegant illuminations and a delightful atmosphere. Between 26 November and 29 December 2014, more than 140 artisans and vendors will open their lovingly decorated stalls against an impressive historical backdrop. They offer a broad range of gifts such as wooden toys, jewelry creations, fur-lined leather goods and illuminated Christmas stars. Culinary delicacies from the region and around the world are always popular favourites during the holidays. With its 500-year tradition, the Braunschweig Christmas Market is amongst the most attractive and atmospheric Christmas markets in all of Germany. Each year, it attracts several hundred thousand visitors..
Choirs, drama groups and musical ensembles create a colourful cultural programme. Fairy tale readings, a puppet theatre and the Christmas workshop are highlights for every child.
In the past the historical moat was surrounded by many stalls and led a slightly shadowy existence. The stalls were turning their backs on the moat but now this area is transformed into a shining jewel.
The stalls along the moat were repositioned which allows an unobstructed view of the moat. A refined lighting system combined with glass split magically returns water’s sparkle onto the original course of the river Oker. Three rafts allow visitors to stand where the water used to flow and reflective, unobtrusive music enhances the relaxed atmosphere even further.
In this new ‘moat oasis’ you can also look forward to be spoilt with food and drink.
