A very special magic lies above the historic center of Berchtesgaden in the Advent season. Countless Christmas trees, the inviting Advent stadiums and stade Musi give the Berchtesgadener Advent a romantic atmosphere. An Advent market, with a lot of craftsmanship, living traditions and “vui gfui” reminiscent of earlier. Without kitsch and fairgrounds, no Santa Claus or reindeer – on the Berchtesgadener Advent the visitors are enchanted by the unique ambience. Framed by the mystical Watzmann and the impressive facade of the Royal Palace, the Advent of Berchtesgaden puts you in a relaxed pre-Christmas mood.
Craftsmanship & living tradition
Tradition is very much still in evidence at the Berchtesgaden Advent Market on the stalls and on the Christmas trees. Wooden horses, whistles, peacocks and angels as well as many more hand-made exhibits show the Berchtesgaden craftsmanship. For several generations, these wooden figures have adorned the Christmas trees of old-established Berchtesgaden families on Christmas Eve. No baubles or tinsel here, but rural implements with reference to old folk-art from past centuries such as horns, sledges, wooden toys, milk churns and small carts are the decorations of choice at Christmas. To this day, the goods of the Berchtesgaden craftsmen are a popular souvenir of Berchtesgaden.
The children’s eyes are full of joy here
The Berchtesgadener Kinderadvent (open daily from 2 pm to 6 pm) is especially popular among the little ones. The children of the Berchtesgaden can emulate the handicrafts of the artists at the painting workshop. Under the artistic supervision of the local painter Anchi Dollinger wooden plates are decorated and taken home as gifts for grandma, grandfather, mum and dad. In addition, there are wonderful aromas in the children’s bakery after baking biscuits. Friday to Sunday from 2 to 6 pm, the little ones bake Christmas treats for their home with their parents. Dwarf goats and donkeys are waiting for the visitors in the outdoor area of the Berchtesgadener Kinderadvents and the nostalgic children’s carousel offers a small round trip. In the Zwergerlhütte (Gnome’s house) there are hearty sausages and children’s punch. A few meters further on Schloßplatz is the very popular Christmas tree labyrinth with more than 350 Christmas trees with Christmas illustrations, on the basis of which path leads back outside. Every Saturday and Sunday the ‘Berchtesgadener Angel‘comes at 5 pm in Advent and distributes sweets to the children.
Musical Advent and Contemplative Sounds
A rich program of events awaits the visitors every day: traditional sounds from trumpet players and singers, alphorn players and local music students wrap the Berchtesgaden Adventmarket in Christmassy sounds. Again and again impressing are the tower blowers (trumpet players from the top of the tower) from the bell tower of the collegiate church – every Saturday and Sunday at 14.30 clock. The history of Berchtesgaden’s night watchman Anna Glossner is announced every Friday at 17 o’clock at historic market tours. Very popular are the free horse-drawn carriage rides daily from 2 – 5 pm from the historic Nonntal and Schlossplatz via the Triembachereck and Maximilianstrasse.
Regional market and craft stands
Lovingly decorated and with selected products, around 50 advent stands will delight visitors. Almost exclusively local stall operators with regional and traditional products offer gastromic delights, gift ideas, arts and crafts. At the Berchtesgadener Adventmarket there is something special and unique for everyone to find. The Berchtesgadener Handwerkszunft (handiwork) shows its expertise with original Berchtesgaden Christmas tree ornaments. In the woodturners workshop delicate filigree boxes are made and in the carving-workshop the woodchips fly while working on the ornate figures.
From above the Berchtesgadener Adventmarket and the mountain panorama
Starting from the Berchtesgadener Adventmarket, the Emmaus-Rundweg leads for nearly one hour along past numerous churches and chapels in and around Berchtesgaden. In the places of the ‘encounter of Christ’, the essence of the pre-Christmas period is felt and brings peace into the hectic time. During the Berchtesgadener Advent, the Berchtesgadener EmmausRundweg is bathed by around 80 handcrafted lanterns in atmospheric light. The panoramic view of the illuminated roof gables in the village and the magnificent mountains fascinate young and old. Tradition, originality and down-to-earth craftsmanship in a soulful atmosphere make Berchtesgadener Advent a unique experience.
