The tradition and ambiance of Salzburg’s Christmas market make an ideal setting to start off the Christmas season. Every year visitors are enchanted by the charm of Cathedral Square, the traditional booths, the strings of light and the quality of the diversified items on sale. Come and enjoy some of the magic this year: from traditional handicrafts, fine baked goods, Gingerbread ,Stollen , aromatic tree ornaments and various object d’art for the Christmas season. Salzburg’s Christmas market is a feast for all the senses: the delicious scent of mulled wine wafts around booths adorned with precious, decorative, old and new items. Performances by traditional Salzburg choirs and children’s school groups lure a crowd of visitors year after year. The market will be opened by the archbishop on the 1st Saturday in Advent right after the blessing of the Advent wreaths.

A romantic courtyard, a path lined by torches and an oversized Advent calendar are part of the Magic of Advent. The Christmas market in front of Mirabell Palace has become a centre of attraction for young and old over the last few years. Culinary delicacies, mulled wine and the lovingly decorated stalls invite visitors to stop and browse. The centrally located Christmas market is easily accessed – directly across from the bus stop and parking garage and just a few minutes’ walk from the train station.
The Christmas Market on Mirabellplatz in Salzburg enchants visitors with its traditional charm. Fragrant scents, Christmas treats and lovely gifts create a romantic atmosphere to set the mood for Christmas.

A charming Advent market will be held high above the city’s rooftops in the courtyard of Hohensalzburg Fortress. Whether you arrive on foot or by funicular – it affords a stunning view of Salzburg and its Christmas decorations. Countless market booths and a colourful entertainment program transform the medieval castle courtyard into an enchanting marketplace offering local handicrafts, exceptional gift ideas and culinary delicacies. Children will have fun making their own apple-men, straw stars, ice flowers, angels, gift tags and many other objects. Brass concerts and dance music add to the festive spirit of the season. The traditional “Christ Child Salute” by the Armed Fortress Guild will take place at noon on December 24.

One of the most famous and popular events within the framework of the Salzburg Advent is doubtlessly the Advent in St. Leonhard. During the weekends of that period numerous people come from far away to experience this Advent: By the pilgrimage church the sales booths full of atmosphere with their elegance offer Christmas presents with products from different fields of artistic handicrafts, with original children`s toys, with mangers, Christmas tree decorations candles and wax moulds, with do-it-yourself items, handicrafts and many other beautiful and useful items, blended with the odour of honey, lavender, punch and hot Glühwein, in short, a Christmas market which attracts many visitors each year due to its high-quality merchandise.
Additionally, there are events in the pilgrimage church, the winds and the Advent concerts in which many choirs and musical groups as well as famous speakers participate.
Since 1973 this Advent in St. Leonhard has developed from small, modest beginnings to an institution known across the frontiers of Salzburg which has become an indispensable token of folklore customs of the province.
The beautiful Wolfgangsee lies around 1 hours drive from the city of Salzburg. Visitors to the Christmas Market will be amazed at the beauty of lanterns and lights sparkling across the waters of Lake Wolfgangsee.
