Advent in the Mountains – When the scent of Mulled wine and gingerbread is wafting on the crisp, evening air through the snow-covered towns, then it is Advent time once again in Kitzbühel. The Kitzbühel Christmas Market is ‘the place’ to enjoy the magical atmosphere of Advent time. There is so much to see and do – there are nativity plays and concerts, for the children there is the St.Nicolaus weekend, the St. Nicolaus procession with the ‘Krampus’!, then there are pony rides, small petting zoo, and the Children’s Advent calendar competition and much more. There is the historical glockenspiel in the Katharinenkirche . In the nearby village of Reith there is a very special Advent Calendar in the form of 24 decorated buildings which are opened one each day throughout Advent, the local people show their hospitality by offering Glühwein, biscuits and traditional Christmas music. On 3 and 6 December, the Festivals of St. Barbara and St. Nicholas are celebrated according to the old traditions.

Every Friday night throughout Advent there is a torch lit procession led by storyteller Reinhard Juen, who tells the legends of the famous Streif, and where the Advent is celebrated at Rasmushof, young and old stand, in a “forest” of Christmas trees listening to his festive, skiing history tales, then the walk continues towards the Hahnenkamm cable car, those wanting to take the ride up, in the beautifully decorated cable car, to the legendary Hahnenkamm do so, the others make their way back.

( The Hahnenkamm is home of the annual World Cup ski races, including the circuit’s most important event, the downhill race on the famous Streif slope. This downhill is counted as one of the toughest downhill competitions in the World Cup.)

One of the Highlights of Advent are the appearance of the Wiltener Sängerknaben (Wilten Boys’ Choir)

Heavenly Advent on Rasmushof

Just 5 minutes from the busy city centre, and yet in a completely different world, Heavenly Advent is celebrated at Rasmushof directly next to the near-vertical slopes of the famous Streif. Here, on the Christmas lawn, the magic of Christmas is almost tangible. An entire “forest” of decorated Christmas trees, with thousands of shiny baubles, twinkling lights, the smell of home-made cookies and spicy, fragrant Glühwein, bring to mind the Christmases of our childhood. Here you are able to sample regional delicacies such as home-baked bread with a selection of spreads, freshly roasted chestnuts, Stollen and Gingerbread. There is even more to see at weekends during the season of Advent with children’s afternoons, trumpeters and the petting zoo

The Battle of the Hahnenkamm. Feb 29th, 2020, from 18.30am. The Streif uphill, 860 meters from start to finish.
