Graz – Christmas Markets in Austria
Graz Weinachtsmarkt

Date : 22.11.2019 – 24.12.2019

Official opening of the Christmas Markets in Graz : 22.11.2019. Time :  16:00 – 16:30

An event not to be missed! The traditional “Krampus and Perchten” procession taking place in Graz on Sunday, the 1st of December 2019 (between 4 pm and 6 pm)

Discover Graz and its numerous Christmas markets, conveniently located within walking distance! The oldest Christmas market takes place around the Franciscan church. Styrian arts and crafts, regional farm products, hot punch and mulled wine warm the heart. Close by is the Christmas market in front of the City Hall with the giant Christmas tree and the old fashioned merry‐go‐round for children. Watch out for the huge advent calendar on the façade of the City Hall.
If you want to combine your Christmas shopping with a good cause and some good entertainment, you’re in the right place at Eiserne Tor. This market is run exclusively by local charity organisations and the proceeds go to selected charity projects.
And not to miss the monumental ice sculpture in the Landhaushof depicting the nativity scene. This magical Christmas manger, made with about 50 tons of crystal‐clear ice, is sure to be an amazing – if transitory – work of art again in 2016. Quite unique: The Office for Christmas Carols. Since 1991, the Office for Christmas Carols has been the number 1 address for all questions and issues regarding to both Alpine and international carols, lyrics, stories and poems of the festive season. Besides an extensive library of sheet music, the knowledgeable and friendly staff also offers Christmas carol search service. From here, lyrics and sheet music are sent all over the world.

Experience the beautiful façade of the Graz Rathaus (City Hall) transformed into a huge, illuminated Advent calendar at dusk. From December 1st, Advent motifs projected onto the façade prepare the way for Christmas.

Why not “Take the Train”….The small and friendly fun train takes its warm, comfortable passengers on a ride through the old town of Graz. It runs between the Advent markets and is a real blessing when you are worn out from shopping and visiting the Christmas sights. Starting point: Advent market in front of the Rathaus/Hauptplatz.

The Christmas Tree in the Hauptplatz can not be missed with 25,000 lights twinkling on it.

Being a child (again) at Advent

What would Advent be without children? For all the little guests, Advent in Graz has a lot to offer: the Children’s Advent market on Kleine Neutorgasse street lifts kids’ spirits sky-high – and not just on the nostalgic big wheel! Their eyes light up at the sight of the carousel, fairy tale train, “Schaumbecher” dessert treats and candy floss. It’s a similar reaction at the Children’s Winterworld on Karmeliterplatz square, where a 700 m2 ice rink awaits skaters, both small and large. No chance of boredom in the kids’ tent thanks to the biscuit-baking studio, creative workshop, story-telling, playground and Advent nursery rhyme singing.

If that feels like enough walking, then the Adventzug train conveys both young and old through the historic centre – from one market to the next. Operating again this year is the Adventbim, a veteran tram festively decked out and inviting you to ride along through the Christmassy city.
