A Whisky Macdonald more commonly known under the shortened name Whisky Mac is a cocktail made up of whisky and ginger wine. The whisky is expected to be a Scotch whisky, usually a blended type. The ginger wine should be green ginger wine. Recipes vary from those having equal parts of each ingredient to those that use a ratio of 3 to 2 of whisky to wine.
1 measure whisky
1 – 2 measures ginger liqueur or 1 measure of fresh ginger syrup
Garnish with candied ginger
Serve cold: Half fill a cocktail shaker with crushed ice and place the whisky and ginger liqueur or syrup inside. Shake well. Strain into a cocktail glass. Garnish with candied ginger.
Serve hot: Place all ingredients in a mug and add 100 ml boiling water. A great winter warmer.
On the rocks: Fill a tumbler with ice cubes. Add all the ingredients and stir. Enjoy!
To make home-made Ginger Syrup: Peel a 4″ piece of fresh ginger. Slice thinly. Place this with 400 g and 400 ml in a saucepan. Bring the heat up gently and simmer for 30 minutes. Leave to cool before straining out the pieces of ginger, retain the pieces of cooked ginger to make home-made candied ginger. Place the syrup in a screw-topped jar and store in the fridge until needed.
To make home-made candied ginger: Take the slices of cooked ginger and cover in sugar, taking care not to let the slices touch without a layer of sugar in between. Leave these to dry for a few days before using.
