A Scandinavian version of vin chaud or mulled wine; a hot punch made of red wine, brandy and sherry flavoured with almonds, raisins and orange peel.
Aquavit or you can use brandy or vodka
One piece of ginger
Depending on how much you want to make use a cup or mug to measure out the ingredients, just use the same size cup for all the ingredients.
Soak half a cup of raisins in one cup of the Aquavit (or Brandy/Vodka) and soak for 30 minutes.
Place a large pan over a high heat and add one cup of water with half a cup of sugar, stirring well all the time until the sugar is completely dissolved.
Lower the heat and then add the spices – 4 whole cloves, 2 sticks of cinnamon (snapped in half), 6 whole cardamon pods (slightly crushed by hand), the thinly pared orange zest, a small piece of peeled fresh ginger. Keep stirring the mixture but DO NOT allow to boil.
Add the aquavit and soaked raisins, two cups of red wine and two cups of port. Taste and sweeten if necessary.
Strain the mixture and serve hot. Add a raisin and a sliver of almond to each glass before serving.
Glogg can be made a day in advance and kept covered and at room temperature. Warm through again before serving.
