This creamy potato dish works ideally for rich meats such as beef or lamb.
1 kg – 2 lb Potatoes
60g – 2 oz butter
Salt & Pepper
175g – 6 oz Gruyere Cheese, grated
150 ml – 1/4 pint single cream
Pre-heat the oven – to 190 °C/175 °F/gas mark 5.
Lightly grease a shallow ovenproof dish.
Slice the potatoes thinly on a manoline or in a food processor and arrange a layer of the potato slices in the bottom of the dish. Sprinkle with salt, pepper and nutmeg and a little of the grated cheese.Continue to layer in this way finishing off with a layer of the grated cheese.
Beat the egg and cream together and pour over the potatoes. Bake in the oven for 40-50 minutes until the top is bubbling and golden brown.
