The Arc de Triomf was built as the gateway portal to the 1888 Universal Exhibition. The massive red brick Arc de Triomf stands at the end the Passeig de Lluís Companys, a wide pedestrian boulevard that serves as the entrance to Barcelona’s beautiful urban park, Parc de la Ciutadella. Many visitors pass through the Arc de Triomf on their way to see all the sites at the Parc de la Ciutadella, including the Barcelona Zoo and the Cascada fountain. It is a much-photographed Barcelona landmark, as it’s also near a busy metro station. The front frieze contains the stone sculpture “Barcelona rep les nacions” (Catalan for “Barcelona welcomes the nations”) by Josep Reynés. The opposite frieze contains a stone carving named “Recompense”, a work from the earliest period of Josep Llimona.
