Since 2005, Athens has joined in the celebration of LGBT rights with an annual Pride Parade. Last year the city won the title of “Best of Gay Cities 2014” for the CULTURE EXPERIENCE criteria! Athens Pride, the premier Greek LGBT Pride Parade and Festival, is held every June in the center of the Greek capital and is one of Europe’s most dynamically growing pride festivities! Although gay weddings are not legally recognized in the country, Greek society is steadily adopting an open-minded disposition towards gays and lesbians.
There is a growing gay entertainment scene in Athens and there are many places frequented by gays and lesbians. There is a wide choice of gay and lesbian bars and nightclubs in the city as well as restaurants, bars and gay saunas. As in all Mediterranean countries evening dinner is very late, and gay nightlife starts even later. The gay clock starts late in Athens, with nothing getting very full before midnight, and with many places not hitting their peaks until around 3AM. Bear culture in Athens is surprisingly strong, as is lesbian life – but there’s a full range of gay types (and non-types), and they mix with each other much more freely than in many other cities.
Although the scene used to be based in Makrygianni and Kolonaki, and the legendary gay bars and clubs of the past remain and are still popular, Gazi has become the hippiest gay or gay-friendly neighborhood in Athens in recent years, with most of the activities revolving around there. With the exception of strictly gay and lesbian venues, most establishments in the area are gay-friendly and open to all. Although clustered around the Kolonaki and Makrygianni neighborhoods up until about a decade ago, much of gay Athens life is now centered on Gazi, a former industrial area on the city’s western side. Legendary gay bars and clubs of the past remain and are still popular both in Makrygianni and Kolonaki. On weekends, the streets in the neighborhood of Gazi are literally packed with locals.
