The Jardins de la Fontaine is a public park located in Nimes in the Gard . They are developed around the original spring in Nîmes discovered by the Romans, . Their architectural organization also highlights two ancient monuments , the Temple of Diana and the Tour Magne .Les Jardins de la Fontaine was one of the first of the public parks of Europe and is still today one of the most remarkable.
In the xviii th century , the work to regulate the flow of the spring Nemausa has uncovered many remains from Roman times: a temple dedicated to Augustus , a theater, antiques .
Les Jardins de la Fontaine was made in 1745 on the basis of these remains. They made it possible to highlight two other Roman monuments which have stood the test of time, the Temple of Diana and the Tour Magne . The project was led by Jacques Philippe Mareschal , military engineer of King Louis XV and director of fortifications in the province of Languedoc .
At the Gallo-Roman times , the area of Jardins de la Fontaine included thermal baths of the city (which you can see some remains). Recent excavations have yielded a rich 11th century mansion (Rue Pasteur), the traces of a neighborhood native and, at the intersection of Boulevard and Rue Jaures in Sauve, a lavish public building which the use of remains a mystery.
Les Jardins de la Fontaine are now among the outstanding gardens of France , gardens enjoying a label awarded by the Ministry of Culture.
The entrance to the gardens is free. They are open from 7:30 to 22:30 in summer and 7:30 to 6:30 p.m. during the winter.
