The castle of La Rochefoucauld is La Rochefoucauld in Charente. It is the largest castle of Charente and a jewel of the Renaissance .
La Rochefoucauld’s family kept the tower during all periods of expansion and reconstruction of the castle as a witness to the antiquity of their house.
the old Norman keep is the oldest part, built on the first 16 meters, Foucauld I st , around 1030. Other parts of the castle to be built of wood. The west face collapsed in 1960. The reconstruction project could not be completed.
the entrance is through a gatehouse with two towers, built in 1350; Other tours – the three corner towers and the towers intermediaries, are the middle of the xv th century and are topped with battlements and turrets high;the tower is raised to the same period as the towers, so it still dominates the castle. It is equipped with a roof battlements;the two main buildings are in the floors and roof windows have worked very pediment forming a lacy stone;
- there is a profusion of sculptures, but the elegant style of the first period of the Renaissance;
- the molding of the south wing is still Gothic while around the courtyard, east and south wings are decorated with porticoes and arcades on three levels in the Italian (unique in France);
- the chapel is vaulted arches and the door is flanked by fluted columns with Corinthian capitals.
- the masterpiece of the castle is the stairs in a square tower located in the south wing, the contractor has made a continuous spiral staircase without landing.
In 1615 , the medieval castle was demolished. The courtyard is open to the north.
In 1636 , François V de La Rochefoucauld asked the architect William Cazier Angoulême to rebuild the west wing against the dungeon. The Duke had designed the plan with two bedrooms and two upper chambers low. The Duke was taken by the master mason John Cazier, a nephew of the architect, paving work on the city side of the wall.
Reconstruction in 1760 of the wing of the XVII th century was built by François V and destroyed by fire.
