Opened in 1850, the Musée Lorrain now has 4500 m2 of exhibition space, distributed over several remarkable sites in the heart of Old Town: – The Ducal Palace built by the Dukes of Lorraine and its gatehouse, one of the first witnesses of the Renaissance in the East of France – Le Couvent des Cordeliers and the Church of the sixteenth century, in the crypt where lie the graves of the family of Lorraine. Lorrain Museum is now engaged in a project renovation led by the city of Nancy in partnership with the State, the Region and the Historical Society and Museum Lorraine Lorraine. It aims to restructure the museum in preserving historic buildings and create new spaces to meet the missions of museums contemporary expectations of the public today.The museum demonstrates the remarkable artistic and cultural life of the region. Everyday objects, ornaments, weapons and sculptures of prehistoric civilizations, Gallo-Roman and Merovingian show this burst as well as the collections of medieval sculptures richly endowed with religious and funeral.
The Renaissance art is expressed in the the work of Ligier Richier (Church of the Cordeliers), and a set of stained glass and carved works of remarkable, as Christ in the Garden. The paintings of Georges de La Tour and engravings of Jacques Callot meet the splendors of Stanislas. The collection of pottery regional eighteenth and nineteenth centuries is a set of reference. A miniature room and two rooms devoted to Jewish religious objects are private collections in the museum. The daily life of Lorraine in the late eighteenth century to the early twentieth century is illustrated by the collections of folk art and ethnography housed in the convent of the Cordeliers: regional furniture, ceramics popular household items are presented in evocations Lorraine traditional interiors.
