In the heart of the Vercors region, explore this cave hidden within the magnificent Cirque of Choranche. Let yourself drift… The waters of the underground lakes and rivers flood the crystal whiteness of the rock formations with emerald green reflections. Nature at its purest…The stalactites, called soda straws are the great sights of this cave: they are very thin, very fragile. There are thousands of them in Choranche which is a unique scene in Europe.
A journey through time… During the tour, your eyes may catch sight of a cave dwelling animal which is a survivor from the prehistoric era:the Olm…, a curious creature…Endemics from Slovenia, the Olms of Choranche are part of a safeguard programme. You will see these amphibians in aquaria. The Olm lives on micro-organisms and other cave-dwelling species. It can grow up to 35cms long. Therefore, it is considered as the underground world’s greatest predator. This animal has a life expectancy of nearly 80 years The entrance of the Choranche Cave is located at the bottom of the Presles cliffs, which are some of the most beautiful rock faces of the Vercors Region. It is a Mecca for rock-climbers, with 300 meters high cliffs and more than 300 climbs.Near the cave’s entrance, a path will take you to the very heart of nature to go to the Gournier Cave’s porch to finally come back by the waterfall (this walk is to be done on your own responsibility – Put the right shoes on!) From the bar’s or restaurant’s terrace, you can admire the landscape, with the cliffs, the Gournier waterfall and even The Bourne Valley.
