The region of Bourgogne-Franche-Comté now includes the regions of Bourgogne and Franche-Comté, these were merged and the larger region came into being as from the 1st January 2016. The Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region is the sixth largest region of France. Its capital is the city of Dijon but the council of the region meets in Besançon. To the east the region borders with Switzerland.
The main rivers in the region are the Saône and its tributary the Doubs. The Loire river flows through the southwest of the region, at Nevers. The Seine river starts in the Côte-d’Or department.
There are three main mountain ranges in the region:
- The Vosges Mountains
- The Jura Mountains
- The Morvan mountains
