– Albany –

Information

Albany is the oldest continuous European settlement in Western Australia, founded in 1826, three years before the state capital of Perth. The King George Sound settlement was a hastily dispatched British military outpost, intended to forestall any plans by France for settlements in Western Australia. The area was initially named Frederickstown in honour of Prince Frederick, Duke of York and Albany. In 1831, the settlement was transferred to the control of the Swan River Colony and renamed Albany by Governor James Stirling.

Albany is now a regional city of over 35,000 residents and a must to visit for any traveller. The main street overlooks Princess Royal Harbour which has a yacht club for all boating enthusiasts and is a Host Port for this years Clipper Around The World Yacht Race in November.

The first and second ANZAC convoys left from Albany. These convoys consisted of troop ships from all over Australia, as well as New Zealand, and included the flagship of the China Station and a Japanese battle cruiser as part of the naval escort. Albany is the birth place of the Dawn Service and the centenary of these events is November 2014 & April 2015 when 1000?s of people will descend on Albany to share in the history.

whale_shark4There is also a long history of whaling in Albany with the last whale caught in 1978, we now get to enjoy these majestic creatures as they make their way up and down the coast every year. Albany’s many bays and coves provide perfect shelter for mothers and calves with fantastic displays of breaching and tail slapping enjoyed from many vantage point on land and from the local Whale Watching Boats

With wineries to enjoy, mountains to climb, great food events and vintage car races, music, film and food festivals, a huge selection of eateries and over 40 beaches in a 100 kilometre radius there are always activities and outings to keep you occupied. Whether you enjoy leisurely markets, or a bit of kiteboarding, fine dining or surfing, swimming or fishing there is so much to do and see in Albany.
