– Adelaide Port –

Take a deep breath of fresh sea air and get ready to experience South Australia’s maritime heartland.

At Port Adelaide, find evocative seafaring history, a waterside heritage precinct, a colourful pub scene and the world’s only inner-city dolphins – all only 20 minutes from the CBD. Take a walk along the docks and through the old Port to experience the ambience and observe some of the finest colonial and Victorian buildings in Australia. Self-guided tours are available, including ‘Kids Port Walks’, or book a local volunteer tour guide. The Maritime Museum, Railway Museum and Aviation Museum are all on Lipson Street and open daily… check out the spitfire, climb the old ketch and ride the steam train.

Next to the iconic lighthouse, the Sunday market is popular with those hunting antiques, books and bric-a-brac. ‘The Port’ has many hidden treasures, including the South American-inspired Jackalope Gallery and a colourful range of Aboriginal art and gifts at Better World Arts

Port Adelaide

Find great local cafés and, of course, pubs – this is a port. Many of the local establishments serve up a swag of history as well as great food and atmosphere; you can sample them all on the self-guided Port Heritage Pub Trail. A visit to Port Adelaide wouldn’t be complete without stopping at the Port Dock Brewery Hotel for a beer

River boat cruises show another fascinating view of the area – the famous Port River dolphins are well-known for following the boats. Dolphins can often be seen in shallow protected waters and the Port River Dolphin Trail identifies ideal viewing opportunities for those with their own transport.

Kayaking is another way in which you can explore the rich marine environment, the abandoned wrecks of the ships’ graveyard and the vast number of mangrove-lined tidal creeksAfter your visit to Port Adelaide, be sure to see popular seaside Semaphore, only two kilometres west of the Port.
