500 Years of Southern Hospitality

500 Years of Southern Hospitality: Some will argue, but Jacksonville is actually the location of the nation’s first Thanksgiving, dating back to 1564 and the arrival of the first French Huguenots to Fort Caroline. Jacksonville is also the original Hollywood, in the early years of the 20th century, the warm climate, striking natural surroundings, diversity of architecture, inexpensive labor and easy rail access attracted more than 30 movie studios to Jacksonville, earning the city the title of “Winter Film Capital of the World.” We are also the birthplace of Southern Rock, with two of Southern rock’s architects, Lynyrd Skynyrd and The Allman Brothers Band being formed in Jacksonville. Our musical heritage is palpable today as historic music venues and modern music clubs host dozens of world-class acts visiting the River City.

Southern Comfort Food

Southern Comfort Food: Jacksonville’s dining scene is an eclectic hybrid of inspired casual elegance and classic southern comfort. In the last year alone, a new “Food & Beer District” has sprung in Jacksonville’s historic Riverside neighborhood. On King Street, there are now 11 locally owned restaurants and 2 breweries offering organic, local and sustainable options that give this strip new life and flavors. Jacksonville’s new wave of chefs keeps our local food scene diverse and exciting offering new twists on Southern favorites.
