Plymouth Travel Guide

Situated in the heart of an area of outstanding beauty, Plymouth is a city that has it all, a breathtaking coastline with a sweeping sea vista and beautiful moorland that has remained unchanged over centuries. To the North is the Dartmouth National Park, the natural harbour of Plymouth Sound to the South and the Plym and Tamar River estuaries on either side. Plymouth is Devon’s largest city and it’s wonderful position puts it firmly on the map for visitors wanting to explore Devon and Cornwall. Plymouth has a rich maritime history and water stil plays an important part in life today in the city. The magnificent setting of Plymouth Sound and its estuaries are nationally recognised as one of the richest maritime historic enviroments in the U.K. and preserved with European Marine Site Status.

These waters provide protection for juvenille fish as well as homes for the two native species of seahorses, whilst also attracting species such as dolphins, porpoises, sals and even basking sharks! If you are sailing into Plymouth you will be greeted with the wonderful sights of Drakes Island, Mount Edgcumbe and the magnificent Sound.

Plymouth’s position gives a great choice of stunning beaches in easy reach of the city, going east you will find Wembury, Mothecombe Estuary, Wonwell Beach, Bantham (a great surfing beach), and Bigbury Bay. Travelling west there is a breathtaking view of Whitsand Bay, or carry on to Seaton and Downderry sands. Coastal walks are among some of the best in the U.K., the South West Coast Path leads through wonderful seaside scenery surrounding the City. Plymouth also offers a great variety of entertainment from amazing art, world class theatre and Music festivals there is always something to enjoy in Plymouth.

For those who just love a little bit of retail therapy then you will not be dissapointed, alongside all the major high street brands you will find cute little boutiques, quirky shops and markets all situated in the bustling heart of the shopping area, and for when your feet start to complain a little,then why not sit and enjoy a cup of coffee at one of the many cafe dotted around the city. A must for all visitors is a visit to the world famous Barbican with its selection of independent shops and galleries it is the perfect place to find that ‘something special’ to treat yourself with!
