THE TRAIN RIDE: Climb more than 700 feet through Snowdonia from the harbour at Porthmadog up to the slate mining town of Blaenau Ffestiniog on this famous narrow gauge railway. It’s the oldest independent railway company in the world, founded by an act of Parliament in the 1830s. You’ll chug upwards for 13 miles, sitting in open carriages offering great views of the sea, meadows, lakes and waterfalls.
