Eden Project, Cornwall

This exciting visitor attraction in Cornwall includes the world’s largest greenhouse and inside the artificial  biomes are plants sourced from all over the world. The complex is dominated by two large enclosures one emulates a  tropical enviroment and the other a Mediterranean enviroment. The project is built inside a reclaimed Kaolinite pit  and is situated 5 miles from St.Austell. The Tropical Biome covers 3.9 acres and measures 55metres high, 100 metres  wide and 200 metres long. The tropical plants include fruiting banana trees, coffee. rubber and giant bamboo. The  Mediterranean Biome covers 1.6 acres and measures 35 metres high, 65 metres wide and 135 metres long. it houses  plants such as olives and grape vines. The uncovered outdoor Biome represents the temperate regions of the world  and includes tea, lavender, hops, hemp and sunflowers. This extrodinary spectacle of plants demonstrates the  interaction of man with nature and is packed full of wonders. Children in particular will find this a facinating  day out, there are hide-aways, spy holes, climbing frames in the shape of trees and ships, tube slides, and giant  musical instruments dotted around the site. The landscape changes with the seasons and at Christmas Eden becomes a  winter wonderland complete with its own ice rink. Children can learn about how plants grow throughout the world and  what they produce that we use in our everyday lives. There are giant waterfalls in the tropical biome which help to  keep the air moist, and insects and small repptiles help out with pest control and pollination. There are a variety of sculptures dotted about the project, many of which are from local artists, a favourite is Bombus, a gigantic bumble bee. During school holidays there are various activities that the children can join in with and parents can hire an explorer bag packed full of objects and clues to look out for on a discovery trail. The exotic plants are particularly spectacular with water lily leaves as big as boats, bamboo thick enough to use as scaffolding poles and a fantastic range of fruits from all over the world.

Castles

Castles were first built in England during the Norman Conquest in the 11th century as fortifications. There are many hundreds of castles throughout England some in good repair whilst others have all but completely disappeared other than a few stones to mark the spot.
