Walsingham Abbey. From the Shirehall Museum you enter the beautiful and tranquil grounds of Walsingham Abbey. Legend has it that in 1061 a Saxon noblewoman, Richeldis de Faverches, had a series of visions of the Virgin Mary who showed her a house in Nazareth where the Archangel Gabriel appeared to Mary and announced that she was to become the mother of Our Lord, Jesus. Our Lady asked Richeldis to build a Holy House in Walsingham to which English Christians would be able to visit a ‘Nazareth’ of their own……
The Anglican Shrine of Our Lady of Walsingham. For nearly a thousand years Walsingham has welcomed pilgrims and visitors and that it still true today, in 1931 the Shrine of Our Lady of Walsingham was built close by the Abbey grounds with its replica of the Holy House which houses the image of Our Lady of Walsingham. It has been built using derelict farm buildings and cottages. The Shrine is set in attractive and peaceful gardens in which you are able to follow the stations of the cross……
The Roman Catholic National Shrine is today found at the Slipper Chapel a mile south of Walsingham. In 1896 Charlotte Pearson Boyd purchased the 14th century Slipper Chapel, she was originally an Anglican but converted to Catholicism after she visited many of the Marian shrines of Europe. As a young girl Charlotte dedicated herself to do God’s work and restoration, she restored the former cow shed and barn to the Catholic Church in 1896. The tiny, peaceful Russian Orthodox church of St.Seraphim is situated at the top of Station Road, Little Walsingham and was established in 1967 in the former Old Station building. Climbing the steps you come into the hallway which to the left leads into a room where there is a display of the plans and drawings that is planned for this chapel, turn right and you will find yourself inside the tiny chapel with its altar and beautiful icons, a lovely peaceful and serene room ideal for reflection and prayer…….
The line, which once formed part of the Great Eastern Railway, is the World’s longest 10¼” gauge railway and is 4 miles long. This unique railway opened in April 1982 and runs between the busy harbour town of Wells-next-to-the-Sea and the pilgrimage village of Walsingham. Here one can see the unique Garratt locomotives the “Norfolk Hero” and the “Norfolk Heroine”, both of which were especially built for this line. The journey which takes you through the beautiful Norfolk countryside takes around 30 minutes…..
The original Farm Shop was opened in Little Walsingham with the vision of connecting local producers directly with their customers. There are now two farm shops and two restaurants, the other being at Norfolk Lavender. Quality meat, poultry and game from their own farm and local suppliers are available along with a wealth of other great local and home-made foods.

Walsingham Farms Shop have commissioned a pack of leaflets with details of interesting walks through the beautiful Norfolk countryside around Walsingham, which are complete with nature notes and local lore. The pack of five different walks can be obtained from the Walsingham shop or other shops and Tourist Centre in Walsingham.
