Flatford Mill is situated in Flatford,East Bergholt, Suffolk, in the heart of the beautiful Dedham Vale, and is a Grade I listed 18th century watermill built in 1733,attached to the mill is the 17th century miller’s cottage wich is also Grade I listed. The Mill and the surrounding buildings and countryside were made famous by the works of John Constable whose father owned the mill. Flatford Mill, and is in the title or the subject of several other of his largest paintings including Flatford Mill from a lock on the Stour, Flatford Mill from the lock (A water mill) and The Lock. The Hay Wain, which features Willy Lott’s Cottage, was painted from the front of the mill. His paintings are in galleries all over the world: Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum, Madrid, plus others in Philadelphia, London and elsewhere. The mill is located just downstream from Bridge Cottage which, along with neighbouring Valley Farm and Willy Lott’s Cottage, are leased to the Field Studies Council, a group that uses them as locations for arts-based courses.
