Zurich, Switzerland

Zürich, lying at the heart of Europe, is the largest city in Switzerland and is the capital of the canton of Zurich. It is located in central Switzerland at the northwestern tip of Lake Zurich, 409 m above sea level. Lake Zurich is 28 km long and up to 4 km wide with high-quality water. Boat trips on Lake Zürich, or on the Limmat River, which runs under 7 bridges and through the center of the Old Town. Zürich is one of the cities with the largest number of fountains in the world: drinking water bubbles from around 1,200 fountainsZürich International Airport is only a 10 minute train ride away from the city centre and has direct connections with 180 destinations. Zürich has the densest public transport network in the world: S-Bahn express trains run every 15 or 30 minutes throughout the Zürich region; buses and trams run every few minutes. Zürich Main Railway Station: Intercity trains depart to popular Swiss destinations and some European cities as frequently as every 30 minutes.For centuries, Zürich was the starting point, home and a stopping-off place for such avant-garde writers and artists as Mozart, Goethe, Lenin, Georg Büchner and Thomas Mann. It is now the cultural capital of Switzerland.In 15 BC, the Romans set up a customs post known as „Turicum? on the Lindenhof; today this square is a popular vantage point, offering views of the well-preserved historic Old Town. During the Middle Ages, Zürich was an important pilgrimage site as the burial place of the remains of the martyrs Felix and Regula, Zürich’s patron saints. In 1351, Zürich joined the Swiss Confederation.Zurich is a leading global city and among the world’s largest financial centres. The city is home to a large number of financial institutions and banking giants.According to several surveys from 2006 to 2008, Zurich was named the city with the best quality of life in the world as well as the wealthiest city in Europe. An impressive number of museums and art galleries can be found in the city, including the Swiss National Museum and the Kunsthaus.
