St. Moritz/Davos/Chur–Tirano The Albula/Bernina route operated by the Rhaetian Railway constitutes one of the most spectacular Alpine crossings. Listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage site, this route links north and south Europe completely without the use of cogwheel technology. A particular highlight is the peaks-to-palms trip by Bernina Express as it passes through 55 tunnels and crosses 196 bridges on its way to Tirano in neighbouring Italy. In summer it is also possible to cross back into Switzerland with the Bernina Express Bus, travelling along the Lake Como shoreline to Lugano. The Bernina Express comprises panorama carriages (1st and 2nd class). A railbar serves snacks and drinks. Reservation is required.
The trip on the Bernina Express through this World Heritage Site is a 4 hour railway journey across the Bernina Pass on the highest point at 2,253 metres in altitude.
