Västerås Information Guide
Västerås is one of Sweden’s oldest cities and the area has been inhabited since the Nordic Viking Age, earlier than 1,000AD. It is situated on Lake Mälaren in the province of Västmanland where it is Scandanavia’s largest lakeside commercial and recreational port. Västerås is mainly an industrial city with many skyscraper buildings having replaced the old traditional houses now.
One skyscraper locally referred to as ‘Skrapan’ houses Swedens highest cocktail bar on the 24th floor of the building. The city is now rebuilding several of the old harbour districts in an aim to attract residents and tourists to the city. With the new homes, shops and restaurants being built around the lakeside this area is fast becoming popular and boat trips on the lake take visitors out to some of the 300 islands which are situated within the archipelago including trips to the Viking own of Birka.
During the winter months Lake Mälaren is still teeming with people as winter activities are plentiful here, try out the skating, skiing or sledging. Västerås has seven indoor shopping centres where you can shop until you drop, here you will find charming boutiques, large stores, intimate cafes and restaurants, in fact everything you need.
Frösåkers Brygga – Visitors come from all over the world to enjoy the Viking experience in the Viking settlement in Frösåker on the shores of Lake Mälaren. There are boat trips and Viking banquets, music and educational talks all set amid amazing scenery.
