Uppsala Information Guide

Uppsala is a vibrant university city lying in the heart of Sweden and less than an hour from Stockholm, it houses Sweden’s oldest university which was founded in 1477. With two universities the city is filled with young people and although retaining its old-world charm and its historic quarter to the west of the river, it also has plenty of the shops and restaurants found in large cities. Uppsala is the fourth largest city in Sweden and Arlanda International Airport is only around a 20 minute drive away.

Uppsala houses some unique cultural treasures and is home to Sweden’s largest and tallest church, the Cathedral of Uppsala – Uppsala domkyrka, which was built in the 13th century and consecrated in 1435. The cathedral is also a royal burial site and contains the graves of kings, queens and other important persons including the scientist Carl Linnaeus. Uppsala is the seat of the Archbishop of the Church of Sweden. Visit Uppsala Castle – Uppsala Slott, in which many important events in Sweden’s history have taken place.

Today the castle is home to the county governer and also houses three museums – Uppsala konstmuseum (Uppsala Art Museum), Fredens Hus (House of Peace) and Vasaborgen . Stroll through the Botanical gardens and follow the footsteps of the botanist Carl Linnaeus in the gardens which bear his name.

In the Botanical Garden you will discover flowering plants all year round and in the tropical greenhouse banana trees, coffee bushes and orchids the orangery houses cacti, bay trees, fig trees and olive trees. The Gamla Uppsala is home to several pre-Viking, pre-historic burial mounds. There is also an old church and the open-air museum Disagården with old Swedish houses.

The Fyrisån – River Fyris – divides the city’s two main parts, the historic quarter to the west and the commercial and residential to the east. The charming cobblestoned district around the Fyris river and St Erik’s Square has many charming shops where you can browse or check out the modern malls and pedestrian streets where there is a good mixture of shops, cafes and restaurants to choose from.
