Linking the cities of Oslo and Bergen, the Bergen Railway is the highest mainline railway in Northern Europe, crossing the Hardangervidda plateau at 1,237metres above sea level. The railway from Bergen to Voss was opened in 1883 and then continued over the mountain to Oslo, opening in 1909. The distance from Bergen to Oslo, via Drammen, covers 496 kilometres (308 miles)and takes around seven hours, it is popular with commuters and tourists alike. The Railway serves a number of ski resorts and is, therefore, as busy in winter as it is in summer. The Railway took 34 years to complete and includes 182 hand-carved tunnels.
