Efteling opened its doors on 31 May 1952, as a Fairytale Forest with ten fairytale depictions set amongst natural surroundings. Anton Pieck was responsible for the designs and filmmaker Peter Reijnders provided the technological expertise, making the designs threedimensional, real and lifelike. Sleeping Beauty’s castle on top of a hill, a beautiful square with trumpeting heralds and that well-known character with a long neck… More than 60 years later visitors still marvel at Efteling’s sights. They test their limits on thrilling attractions, such as the Python steel rollercoaster, The Flying Dutchman ghost ship and the wooden racer rollercoaster George and the Dragon. They enter the world of dreams in unique attractions like the Creepy Castle, the Eastern-themed Fata Morgana and Dreamflight, which is home to fairies and trolls.
Since 1952 more than 116 million visitors have experienced an unforgettable day at Efteling. With more than 4 million visitors each year the park has grown to become the Netherlands’ most visited daily attraction and one of Europe’s most successful theme parks.
The World of Efteling also comprises a hotel, a holiday park, a golf course, a theatre and a wide range of facilities for business events. Through television series, musical productions and a children’s radio station, Efteling is increasingly venturing outside its park borders in Kaatsheuvel. Despite all these developments, Efteling has always remained true to its roots: the telling of fairytales, sagas, legends, myths and stories.
Over the coming years Efteling aims to expand from a regional park into a short-break destination with 5 million visitors by 2020. The creation of an optimal experience, both within the theme park and in the overnight accommodations in Kaatsheuvel, is the key to achieving this ambition.
