In Luxembourg, drivers are required to drive on the right and overtake on the left. There is an excellent network of roads and motorways. All vehicles must carry a warning triangle and the horn must only be used in emergency situations.
The minimum driving age in Luxembourg is 18. It is recommended that drivers carry their driving license, insurance certificate and vehicle registration and passport.
To rent a car, you must be at least 21 years old (age may vary by car category) and held a driving license for 1 year. Drivers under 25 may incur a ‘Young Driver Surcharge’. Seatbelts are compulsory in the front and rear of all vehicles. Children under 12 years of age must travel in the back seats unless they are 1.5m (5ft) or taller or if the front seat is fitted with an appropriate ECE-approved child seat.
Speed limits in Luxembourg are as follows: City roads 31mph/50kph, Open roads 56mph/90kph, Highways 74mph/120kph.
There are no toll roads in Luxembourg.
Blue zone parking exists in major cities. ‘Pay Car Parks’ and parking meters are available in Central Luxembourg. As an alternative, there are also free car parks located on the outskirts of town, from where buses regularly serve the city.
Parking discs for these zones can be obtained from the ACL motoring club, police stations, tourist offices and shops. Luxembourg City has parking meters and machines that dispense parking tickets. Wheel clamps are placed on illegally parked vehicles.
