Duomo of Orvieto, Umbria, Italy

The spectacular 14th century Cathedral in Orvieto, Umbria is one of the great buildings of the world and is set high above the houses of the town with a wonderful view over the surrounding hills. The building was constructed on the orders of Pope Urban IV to house the ‘Corporal of Bolsena’ and work began in 1290. The ‘Corporal of Bolsena’ is a cloth which is said to have come from a priest who was making his way home from Rome following a pilgrimage. He stopped at Lake Bolsena to celebrate mass and was amazed when the communion host began to bleed with so much blood that it soaked into a cloth. This miraculous cloth is now stored in the Chapel of the Corporal inside the Cathedral.
