The Basilica della Santa Casa / Basilica of the Holy House is a shrine of Marian pilgrimage in Loreto, Italy. The basilica is known for enshrining the house in which the Blessed Virgin Mary is believed to have lived. It has been a Catholic pilgrimage destination since at least the 14th century. Tradition has it that this is the house in which the Virgin Mary was raised and received the news that she was with child. The house is supposed to have been transported from Nazareth by Angels. The walls are adorned with graffiti which have been likened to those of the Judeo-Christians in the Holy Land in ancient times. The exterior of the Holy House is encased in an ornate marble structure.
