Places of Interest and Attractions in Basilicata

Lying in the South of Italy is the small region of Basilicata and is divided into the two provinces of Matera and Potenza, Potenza is the regional capital. Basilicata is mostly mountainous with some dramatic scenery and has coastlines on both the Ionian and Thyrrenian Seas. The region’s economy is based mainly on agriculture.

Basilicata is a region lying in the south of Italy with coastline on the Adriatic, Tyrrhenian and Ionian Seas and has borders with the regions of Campania, Puglia and Calabria. The regional capital is Potenza.

Basilicata covers an extensive part of the southern Apennines. Basilicata is the most mountainous region in the south of Italy. The climate is continental in the mountains and Mediterranean along the coasts. Potatoes and maize are produced in the mountain areas. Olives and vines are also commonly found. There are also large herds of cattle.

Pollino National Park

The Pollino National Park / Parco nazionale del Pollino is a national park in Basilicata and Calabria, southern Italy. Comprised within the provinces of Cosenza, Matera and Potenza, with its 1,820 square kilometres it is the largest natural park in the country.

Castle of Melfi

The castle of Melfi in Basilicata is a monument owned by the Italian State and one of the most important medieval castles in Southern Italy. Its construction, at least the components still visible, dates back to Norman times and has undergone significant changes over time, especially in Angevin and Aragon time.

Sassi Matera

Sassi Matera has gained international fame for its ancient town, the “Sassi di Matera”. The Sassi originate from a prehistoric settlement, and are suspected to be some of the first human settlements in Italy. The Sassi are houses dug into the calcareous rock itself, which is characteristic of Basilicata and Apulia

grapesPig farming plays an important role in the cuisine of Basilicata as Pork is an integral part of the local cuisine and is spit roasted, grilled or made into wonderfully tasty sausages. Staple crops of the region include lentils, fava beans, chickpeas, artichokes, broccoli, potatoes, carrots, tomatoes, olives and grapes and it is with these fresh, simple ingredients that the people of Basilicata have produced a great variety of hearty wholesome dishes.
