Via Veneto, Rome

The Via Veneto has long been known for its luxurious and expensive houses, even since the days of the Roman Empire. today it is home to some of the most exclusive of Rome’s hotels and cafes as well as the American Embassy, once a palazzo belonging to the Ludovisi family who owned most of the property on the Via Veneto. Federico Fellini’s classic 1960 film “La Dolce Vita” was mostly filmed around the Via Veneto area. The Via Veneto is also home to the famous Café de Paris and Harry’s Bar which featured in Fellini’s film. The Via Veneto winds along from the Piazza Barberini and the Fontana del Tritone up to the Porta Pinciana at the Villa Borghese gardens. In this area look out for:- The Palazzo Barberini, built in 1623, was named after Pope Urban, Barberini was his family name, it houses paintings from the 13th to the 16th century. It is open daily (except Mondays from 09.00 to 19.30. The Fontana del Tritone, by Bernini, in the Piazza Barberini (1642). In the Via delle quattro fontane, at the highest point of the Quirnal Hill, the highest of the seven hills of Rome, are the four fountains “Quatro Fontane”, which were commissioned by Pope Sixtus V in his restoration project of Rome. In the church of Santa Maria della Vittoria in the Via XX Settembre, look out for the beautiful statue of “The ecstacy of St Teresa” by Bernini. There are two Metro Stations to choose from to get into the Via Veneto area, these are Piazza Barberini and Piazza della Repubblica.
