Roman Forum, Rome

At first sight it is difficult to see what once was the heart of the Roman Empire, looting in the Middle Ages for building materials have robbed us of the magnificent structures that once stood here, but with a map of the area one can walk around the site and visulise how it once looked and how life was in Roman times long ago. The Roman Forum was the central part of the city and Roman citizens referred to the forum as the marketplace. This is where business was conducted and the administration of justice took place. The Roman Forum was designed by Vitruvius and, for centuries, was the site of Rome’s most important public buildings such as The Arch of Septimus Severus, and the Roman Forum Rostra and platforms for public speeches. The area was filled with magnificent statues, monuments and architecture. It contained the Roman Kingdom’s earliest shrines and temples. Today this sprawling ruin of archeological excavations attracts millions of visitors once again to walk to pathway once walked by ancient Romans, Emperors and Gladiators. The main sights of the Forum include the Arch of Titus, the Temple of Saturn, Temple of Vesta, and the church of San Luca e Martina all linked by the Via Sacra.
