Palazzo del Quirinale, Rome

The Palazzo dei Quirinale is the official residence of the President of the Italian republic. It takes it name from the the hill on which it stands, the Quirinale Hill the tallest of the seven hills of Rome. It has housed thirty popes, four kings and eleven presidents of the Italian Republic. The palace, located on the Via del Quirinale and facing onto the Piazza del Quirinale, was built in 1583 by Pope Gregory XIII as a papal summer residence. This area was already inhabited in ancient Rome. The Corazzieri Barracks are attached to the palace and below these have been found traces of the Servian Walls which were the oldest in the city, and a temple podium. It is thought that the house of the Emperor Vespasian may have stood on this spot. In the piazza stands the Monte Cavallo fountain depicting the statues of the twins Castor and Pollux taming the horses.
