Circus Maximus, Rome, Italy

Today’s Circus Maximus is a public park where modern day Romans go for a stroll or just sit in the sunshine and watch people walking by. In ancient Rome it was also a place for Romans to gather and enjoy themselves as there were many different events which took place here. Its main entertainment was chariot racing and it could accommodate around 150,000 spectators (although some reports state it to be more than double that number) who would come to watch the games and to gamble on the outcome. Measuring a massive 621 m by 118 m Circus Maximus is the biggest sports stadium ever built. The original Circus Maximus was built from wood but was burnt down a few times, it was later rebuilt using stone, concrete and marble but sadly these materials were looted during the Middle Ages and therefore little remains to be seen today.
