Castel Sant’Angelo, Rome
The Castel Sant’Angelo is the more recognised title for the Mausoleum of Hadrian. It is located in the Parco Adriano near to the banks of the River Tiber in Rome. The Roman Emperor Hadrian originally commissioned the building of the castle as a mausoleum for himself and his family(AD130-139) , it was later used by the popes as a fortress, prison and residential castle. There is a covered walkway from the castle to the Vatican which was used by the popes in times of trouble to get to safety. Today it is The National Museum of the Castel Sant’Angelo and houses exhibits of Renaissance paintings and pottery to ancient military weapons. There is a huge spiral ramp which leads up to the tower around 400 feet high. From the top there are fantastic views over the city of Rome, the River and the people below.
