Monterosso al Mare is one of the five villages of the “Cinque Terre” on the rugged coastline of Liguria. The “Cinque Terre” or “The Five Lands” is composed of five villages: Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore.
The coastline, the five villages, and the surrounding hillsides are all part of the Cinque Terre National Park and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Monterosso al Mare was extensively damaged by a flood on 25 October 2011.
There are two parts to the town “The Old Town” and “The New Town” which are linked by a tunnel which caters to the pedestrians and the very few cars that are in the town. The beautiful beach is the only extensive sandy beach of the Cinque Terre and is popular with visitors and locals alike, although only a small town, Monterosso al Mare is overrun with tourists.
