Cycling in Germany

As a nation the Germans love their bicycles,it is, of course, a great way to keep fit and lots of fun too. Germany is extremely cycle friendly and there are many beautiful trails to follow. There are 200 long distance cycle routes throughout Germany offering opportunities to enjoy the scenic beauty of nature, take leisurely trips through the wine growing regions, follow one of the many rivers for a more gentle ride or if you are very fit and daring, take a trip into the alps, tough but rewarding. The south-east of Thuringia features a large area of artifical lakes that are similar to the landscape of the fijords. The Saalecycling paths attract cyclists to the scenic landscape, castles and palaces to be seen along the way.For something totally different take the Berlin wall trip, travel along the border patrol paths, past museums, memorial sites and the last remaining watchtowers.

A trip along the Baltic Coast wil include places such as Kiel fijord, Bay of Lübeck where the seaside resorts have been restored to their former glory. You can watch the ferries heading out to sea and visit the UNESCO listed towns of Wismar and Stralsund. Although Germany is famous for it’s cars there are actually 40% more bicycles than cars in Germany and with over 7,400 miles of car-free cycle routes to choose from this is the ideal place to take a cycling holiday. You will pass through some of the most picturesque towns and villages on route. Enjoy the landscape with castles and beer gardens, which offer a shady place to sit and sample some mouthwatering cuisine on a hot summers day. There are even opportunities to go cycling without luggage (Radeln ohne Gepack) between Starnberg and Fussen. Tours along the wine routes or along the Romantic road will let you take in all the sights at a leisurely pace.
