Traditional German Rote Grütze Recipe


  • 500 g Berries, frozen-thawed or use fresh
  • 250 g Cherries, sour cherries from the jar
  • 100 g Sugar
  • ¼ l Water
  • 50 g Cornstarch
  • Lemon juice


Mix the sugar with the cherry juice from the jar and bring the water to the boil in a pan and let cool. Then add about 1 / 3 of the fruits and stir every now and then. When the fruits are softened , season with lemon juice. Whisk the cornstarch with water and thicken the juice with it. Finally, add the remaining fruit and stir briefly. Pour into a glass bowl and chill.
