Traditional Daily Meals
Frühstück is still a very important start to the day, and consists of a variety of bread rolls served with a variety of sliced meats, salami, Leberwurst (a spreadable liver sausage), cheeses, eggs and jam. A good coffee and fruit juice, milk or cocoa for the children. However, with today’s hectic lifestyle, cereal has taken over a lot more during the week and the full breakfast is kept for the weekend when it can be enjoyed at a more leisurely pace, with the family.
Mittagessen, taken at noon and lasting until two, has traditionally been the main meal of the day, and in many households around Germany it still is, however within the cities, where lifestyles revolve around the workplace, it is sometimes taken as a quick and smaller meal with the evening meal taking it’s place.
Abendessen or Abendbrot was traditionally a light meal of breads and cold meats, however it is often the main meal of the day when the family come together to eat.
