A Guide to Sport in Berlin

Berlin offers top-level sport, event highlights, trend sports and top arenas

There’s always a match on somewhere in Berlin and the German capital has the world’s best sports fans. High-end events attract sports enthusiasts and spectators from around the world. Berlin hosts several major sporting events every year and many have become legendary: the BMW Berlin Marathon, just to name one. And hardly any other major city in the world offers so much professional sports year-round: six pro sports clubs playing in five sports make Berlin the capital of the sport.

Whether it’s the Olympic Stadium, O2 World, Straße des 17. Juni or the former Tempelhof Airport, Berlin offers the right location for every sporting event. The impressive venues and world-class events inspire athletes and spectators alike. Tens of thousands of visitors are coming to Berlin to watch sporting events in the city. Both sports organisers and athletes feel at home here: there are about 2,000 sports clubs in the city and all athletes will find the right venue to show off their skills here.

The Berlin Olympic Stadium, which was built in the 1930s, is one of the most impressive sights in the capital. Football was played here not only during the 2006 FIFA World CupTM, but also during the World Cup back in 1974. Nowadays there is space for nearly 75,000 spectators in the stands, and it’s not only the Hertha BSC football team they are cheering on. The Olympic Stadium is also the traditional venue of the DFB (German Football Association) Cup Final each spring and the ISTAF International Athletics Meeting in late summer. Open-air concerts are held in the large arena in summer. In June 2015, Berlin’s Olympic Stadium will host the final of the UEFA Champions League for the first time. Although it remains unknown which top European teams will compete in the German capital, one winner is already clear: Berlin. Two million visitors from all over the world are expected to come to the city in the days surrounding the final to celebrate the best football in Europe.

The traditional Sechs-Tage-Rennen (Six Day Race), an absolute must for fans of bike racing, attracts sports lovers to the Velodrom every January. Around 75,000 spectators are expected at this top sport event every year. The venue right next door is always packed as well: The Europasportpark SSE is one of the biggest swimming and diving pools in Europe, where both professional clubs and locals can swim their laps and divers can show off their skills.

Another highlight of the sporting calendar is the BMW Berlin Marathon, held every autumn. This year it will take place for the 41st time on 28 September (2014). The inline skaters start on the Saturday, the runners on the Sunday. The 42.195 km-long route passes many attractions and famous places in the capital, such as the TV Tower and Potsdamer Platz, on the way to the finish line at the Brandenburg Gate. Around one million enthusiastic spectators cheer the runners from the sides of the road, while numerous live bands ensure a party atmosphere.
