St.Martin-an-der-Weinstrasse is a beautiful village at the Southern Wine Road in the Rheinland Pfalz. The area has been inhabited since Roman times although the first written record was in 1149 however a village has been here since the 7th century. The medieval town centre, which is listed, combines traditional sandstone buildings with every modern comfort on the inside.
Wine growers offer wine tastings, restaurants and hotels have the best food and service to make your visit really memorable. Explore the spotlessly clean streets and discover quaint antique shops and curio shops standing next to the small stream which runs gently along the main street in the town. The church of St.Martin of Tours stands overlooking the town and holds many Gothic art treasures in addition to a late Gothic vault, this is a UNESCO site. Outside the church is a sandstone statue of St.Martin which is a listed monument. Throughout the town of St.Martin there are many listed monuments such as half-timbered houses, archways, barns, a school, former aristocratic court, cellars and stone pillars. Listed statues include an 18th century statue of St.Anthony in the Maikammerstrasse, and along the way a late Renaissance wooden statue of Christ in a wall niche from the early 17th Century.
The elevated position of the town is surrounded by acres of rolling vineyards and affords great views over the landscape. The many hotels in St.Martin offer luxurious accommodation and easy access to the many wine tasting outlets. At the lower end of the town there is a Reisemobil Stellplatz in a lovely setting next to a stream with trees and a small wooden bridge giving landscaping to the parking. There are several hiking trails in the area and for the more active, long walks in the Palatinate Forest can be undertaken over a few days with overnight stops in huts along the way.
