Sightseeing in Hannover

Experience Hannover’s highlights, from A for architecture to Z for zoo. Hannover Adventure Zoo with its spectacular theme worlds including the Zambezi, the Jungle Palace and the Yukon Bay Canadian Wilderness, is one of northern Germany’s foremost tourist attractions. Anyone with an interest in river and sea life should pay a visit to the city’s SEA LIFE aquarium, home to over 3,500 underwater creatures. Many of Hannover’s sightseeing attractions can be found along the city’s Red Thread discovery route.

With seven theme worlds, more than 3,000 animals, daily animal shows and 1.5 million visitors every year, Hannover Adventure Zoo is one of the best in Europe. You can glide down the Zambezi river in the African savannah, follow the evolution trail up Gorilla Mountain, or see the baby elephants in the Jungle Palace. Yukon Bay, a Canadian wilderness complete with a ruined goldmine, combines the romance of gold-rush times with the thrill of the wild. Here, packs of amber-eyed wolves howl at intrepid explorers, whilst polar bears can be seen close up in the hull of the grounded ship ‘Yukon Queen’. Pass beyond the ‘mini-Himalayas’ and you will find yourself in the Australian outback, complete with kangaroos, wombats and a landscape inspired by Ayers Rock. The animals at Hannover Adventure Zoo live in fence-free enclosures that resemble their natural habitats.

SEA LIFE Hannover, Germany’s first tropical SEA LIFE marine aquarium, is located in the Berggarten in the Royal Gardens of Herrenhausen. It area of focus ranges from the local Leine river to the Caribbean and the Amazon. The aquarium has more than 3,500 freshwater and marine animals in 37 pools and tanks, from mussels and majestically gliding rays through to piranhas. At the centre is an ocean tank with an underwater glass walkway, where visitors can see sharks circling directly over their heads.

When King George V of Hannover made a gift of Marienburg Castle to his darling wife, he could not have foreseen that his token of love would one day be celebrated as one of Germany’s most impressive neo-Gothic monuments. With its fairytale appearance, host of battlements and turrets and magnificently furnished rooms, the castle enchants visitors or all ages.

The Red Thread is a unique personal guide for visitors who want to explore Hannover and discover its history on their own. Painted on the ground in the centre of the city, this red line weaves its way past 36 of Hannover’s most important attractions on a 4.2km circular tour that is accessible to all. With highlights including the roofless Church of St. Giles, the bridge by the Leineschloss, the flea market with Niki de Saint Phalle’s ‘Nana’ sculptures, Leibniz’s former home, and the ‘Stomach of Hannover’ (Hannover Market Hall), the Red Thread offers varied glimpses of this multifaceted city – and the inspiration to discover more.
